Milledgeville, Georgia is a small town located in Monroe County, Georgia. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Milledgeville is part of the Athens-Clarke Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1837 by Captain John Milledge and his wife Mary Seward. It was named for General George Washington Milledge, who had died two years earlier. The first store in town opened on Main Street in 1839. By 1865, the population of Milledgeville had grown to 2,500 people. In that year, a school was built on what is now the library square and named after Drury Lane Presbyterian Churchman Rev. Ebenezer Bickerton (1811-1882). The first post office was established in Milledgeville on October 6, 1841 by Major James Waddell with five other towns in Monroe County under his jurisdiction as postmasters general concurrent with each other. In 1848, Milledgeville became the county seat of Monroe County when it was created from parts of Clarke and Walton counties. A courthouse and jail were constructed in 1840-1851 on land donated by Judge Daniel Payson (1796-1868). In 1861, a cotton gin and mill were built on what is now Main Street east of town; the first cotton gin west of the Appalachian Mountains was built about this time in Cherokee County near Wilkesboro also by Captain John Milledge Sr.. By 1870, there were 11 stores operating in town; nine of these were owned or managed by Captains John Jr., William Dillard (died 1902), Asahel Coffin (baptized December 16th 1800), Isaac Elmore (1800-1860), Samuel Harkless (born 1793), Elisha Goode (1800-1876) or their families. One important event that occurred during this time period happened when Confederate General Robert Easley surrendered at Appomattox Court House to Union General Ulysses S Grant on April 9th 1865 following several days of battle throughout Virginia including one engagement where over 50% casualties were inflicted upon Confederate forces only 5 miles fromMilledgeville! Shortly thereafter many residents fled to surrounding areas such as Chattanooga due to fear for their safety should they be captured or fight against General Ulysses S Grant’s army while living within easy reach! During Reconstruction Period which followed Civil War ended most jobs left JV township completely so all citizens are farmers today still raising crops using old methods but some have become doctors like my husband
