Milledgeville is a city in Decatur County, Georgia, United States. The population was 24,574 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat and largest city of Decatur County. It lies on the Chattahoochee River and is one of the oldest cities in Georgia. Milledgeville was first settled by African Americans in 1821 as part of what was then Choctaw Nation territory. Milledgeville has been inhabited by people since before European exploration began searching for new land to settle in America. In 1764, Captain James Cook discovered Kennesaw Mountain while exploring Georgia's interior and named it after Sir John Milledge, an Englishman who had explored parts of South Carolina and Florida during that era. Kennesaw Mountain was later renamed for Governor Arthur Withoutaige (1787-1872), who aided white settlers efforts to claim what were now the states of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee during the antebellum period. The first Africans brought overland to this area were two slaves from Africa: Elisha Bankhead (baptized Elishia Bond) and Solomon Northrup (baptized Samuel Northrup). They arrived on horseback on July 20th, 1821 aboard the brig "Eledora" from Savannah. They were joined by nine other black passengers including Jno.[1] The group traveled downriver on rafts until they reached Indian country near present day Dahlonega where they spent three weeks living among the Cherokees before setting out again for Mobile Bay on August 21st with a cargo of corn which they intended to sell back home at Auction House prices set by their masters in England. Captain Francis Lightfoot led a party of thirteen men downriver from Mobile Bay on September 5th 1821 en route to determine whether or not he could find any valid transportation routes across Lake Pontchartrain connecting East Tennessee with Mississippi Territory via Baton Rouge or Natchez Landing without having to traverse through Native American territory. Unfortunately for Lightfoot his attempt failed when he was stopped by Chief Tecumseh's band along Chefoutou Creek just south of present day AthensLedbetter Park during his third attempt downriver from Mobile Bay looking for passage northward across Lake Pontchartrain that season[2]. After spending several weeks stranded ashore at Chefoutou Creek Lightfoot returned downstream upriver towards Natchez Landing where he met General Andrew Jackson’s force marching northwestward across Lake Pontchartrain under orders from President James Kenedy previous year[3]. On October 9th 1821Lightfoot’s party consisting of nine men under Captain John Fenton finally made it upriver past Tuscumbia Bluff upstream from Dahlonega into Indian country between Fort Stedman and Piedmont Bluffs reaching Cahokiaheka about 3 miles below modern day Milledgeville about November 8th[4]. From here they started constructing a small fortification known today asFort Davenport which served as a base camp for future expeditions up river into Cherokee Country[5]. lightfoot decided against continuing further up river due to lack food supplies as well as possible hostile Indians living around him[6] – all within less than 100 miles of fresh water supplies available eastTexas & Arkansas border As early settlers moved into this area there were many conflicts over land ownership between groups such as Cherokee Nation vs white settlers/ planters etc.. These disputes quickly escalated into open warfare leading eventually to mass migrations away from these areas beginning in 1830….. Many refugees turned naturalized U S citizens rather than risk another civil war……….In 1830 traders + farmers established cotton plantations along rivers systems creating large concentration points……………. By 1840 most blacks had left cotton plantations & most whites lived near major towns………. Most black families continued working plantation labor until 1865……………. By 1850 only 2% if all blacks in GA resided in urban areas………………………………….. Atlanta experienced rapid growth starting about 1800 when slave trade ended freeing many more slaves…………….. However MilledgeVILLE did not experience significant growth until after 1860 due largely to lack access to transportation infrastructure

The early history of Milledgeville can be traced back to 1790 when three families from South Carolina moved to what is now Milledgeville after contracting malaria over land that they owned near Augusta. They named their new town "Milledgeville" in honor of General James Wilkinson who had helped win the American Revolution. The first store in Milledgeville was founded by Elisha Payne in 1802. By 1830, there were ten stores operating in town. The growth of Milledgeville began to accelerate during the late 1800s as cotton southern farmers began moving into the area for education and opportunity. Many builders and entrepreneurs came to live and work in MilledgeVILLE during this time period: Wm Bulfinch (1830-1911), John Henshaw (1841-1920), Augustus Woodward (1851-1925), Horace Greeley (1855-1927) among others. In 1907, Jno Pemberton opened his first gas station at 309 Third Street; it would become one of the largest convenience stores west of the Mississippi River until it burned down in 1978. During World War II, MiddledGEVILLE played an important role as a strategic bomber base providing air support for Allied forces fighting against Nazi Germany throughout Europe and North Africa. The plant produced fighter planes such as Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers used by America's Eighth Air Force which dropped supplies and troops behind enemy lines while German planes bombed Mainz cathedral on 15 December 1943killing more than 100 people; these planes were also used by RAF Bomber Command during Operation Market Garden between 26 May 1944and 6 July 1945). After World War II ended throughout most of Asia there was little demand for military goods coming out of America due to Korea peace process; however some manufacturers did start up here like Alcoa which started making aluminum cans here starting in 1951 until its closure in 1973 In 1955 local resident Drayton Wright established Wright Orthopedics which specialised in ankle surgery; he would later become one of America’s best known orthopedic surgeons with clinics across North America before being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer aged 78 years old but lived another 11 years thanks to treatment from his doctors at Emory University Hospital where he was Professor Emeritus until his death on 1 October 2009. He would be followed by his wife Dorothy who continued running operations at their hospital until her death on 22 November 2016 aged ninety nine years old. When Interstate 95 was completed through downtown Atlanta on August 29th 1959 or so locals called it "The Day That Ga went Nuts". This interchange saw several big projects come together such as new streets being built surrounding what is now Midtown Atlanta including Old Fourth Ward Avenue which became Peachtree Street NW then Dunwoody Road SE then Druid Hills Road NE then MLK Boulevard SW finally I-285E/I-85E becoming just east off I-285 about 4 miles north off DeKalb Rd becoming Peachtree Street NW. It also brought pollution Problems because all those cars going through downtown made so much noise that you could hear them if you walked outside. Today Midtown Atlanta has largely recovered from freeway construction although still has some problems like high levels of traffic congestion. In addition other roads nearby such as Lenox Hill Road SW then Gwinnett Place S are still missing parts or have been reconstructed completely different than when they first appeared..

Milledgeville was founded in 1802 by James Milledge and his brother John Milledge. The first store in the area was built on the current site of downtown Milledgeville. The town grew quickly, and by 1810 there were over 20 businesses. In 1814, Milledgeville became an incorporated town. By 1860, the population had increased to 1,500 residents. In 1865, the first school in Milledgeville was opened. The town continued to grow rapidly, and within a few years it had a full-time school system and a library. By 1887, mills had been destroyed by fire, but local farmers began rebuilding them as cotton textile mills. The town's growth stopped around 1900 when World War I caused a decline in demand for cotton textiles;Milledgeville subsequently declined until it regained its former prosperity during the late 1990s through tourism and recent investment from outside interests
