When the United States entered World War I, the fundamental problem facing the country was how to produce munitions. The only way to make artillery and other weapons was by casting metal into small pieces andthen smelting it down into cannons, rifles, pistols, and other firearms. The original Milledgeville Arsenal was built in 1857 by General James Pea Ridge and is now part of Georgia Tech’s Gunsmith Museum. It was used for both cannon production (the largest caliber produced) and handguns such as the revolver which became popular in America during the early 1800s. The arsenal also produced rifle ammunition including shot putters which were developed at the armory specifically for deer hunting purposes; these rifles are still extant today! During World War II, Milledgeville Arsenal served as an important storage facility for munitions during the war effort. In 1945 it closed due to budget cuts but reopened in 1946 as part of NATO’seffortto build stockpiles of arms in case of an emergency anywhere in Europe. As part of these renovations, technological advancements led to enhanced security measures at Milledgeville Arsenal which included installing a radar system that tracked enemy movement! Today, Milledgeville Arsenal functions as an archaeological museum open unto all!

During World War II, Milledgeville served as an airfield for Army Air Forces bombers flying over Rabun Gap National Park before becoming an industrial center after the war ended with its merger with neighboring Alpharetta to form Atlantia Industries Incorporated (AI). AI left MilledgeVILLE after moving their production headquarters from Alpharetta to nearby Sandy Springs in 1996 due to competition from Wal-Mart Stores Inc., but returned to town after wal-mart's closure caused many jobs to go away leaving residents struggling economically despite new businesses coming online such as Allstate Insurance Company which has been headquartered here since 1997 In recent years there have been efforts madeto revitalize downtown Milledgeville including investing millions of dollars into infrastructure projects like new roads and sidewalks as well as redevelopment of some old properties into apartments or commercial spaces The economy has bounced back somewhat recently with new development taking place along Center Street adjacent to Interstate 285 which will be home to multiple restaurants, offices, and retail stores
