Milligan and named for General James A. Milligan, who fought in the Mexican-American War and in the American Civil War as a brigadier general. In 1875, Milledgeville became an incorporated town under the name of Atlanta and it remains that today. Milledgeville is located on I-85 between Atlanta and Birmingham, Alabama. It is bordered by Brookhaven to the east, Midtown Atlanta to the north, Decatur to the west and Howell to the south. The area now covered by Milledgeville was first settled by Cherokee Native Americans before being invaded by white settlers in 1836 as part of a land deal with Mexico City government officials seeking access to new territory near what is now Montgomery County, Alabama. The main street of Milledgeville was laid out as part of this settlement on April 6th of that year when Judge Amos Kendall donated two lots totaling , including what are now central business districts (CBDs) Easley and Alpharetta – both within walking distance of each other – for $885 total ($ per lot). The first store opened in 1840 on Delaware Street which still stands today as one of Milledgeville's most prominent buildings – serving functioned both as a grocery store and post office until 1945 when it became known as simply "The Mill." In 1865–1867 during Reconstruction following Abraham Lincoln's Ulysses S Grant presidency after slavery had been abolished throughout most Southern America via Union military action,[5] General James A. Milledgeville has been home to many famous people including actor Raymond Burr, author Beverly Cleary and business magnate Ebenezer Scrooge McDuckie. Some of the most famous landmarks in Milledgeville include First Baptist Church (founded 1824), Milligan House (built 1830), and Coca-Cola Bottling Plant No.-2 (opened 1911).

Milledgeville was established as a small rural community with few buildings until the early 19th century when sawmills were erected to create flour for local markets. By 1825, milling had become an important industry in Milledgeville and it rapidly grew into a large city by the mid-19th century. In 1875, Milledgeville became one of two cities in Georgia to be incorporated as a municipality. The city experienced rapid growth during the 20th century, becoming one of the most populous cities in Georgia and ranking third among metro areas in population size.
