Milledgeville, Georgia is a small community located in south central Georgia. The town was founded in 1881 by Captain John A. Slings, who named it after his mill on the Chattahoochee River. Milledgeville quickly became a center of gun-making and shooting in the area. In 1912, the first annual Atlanta Gun Show took place here and attracted some of the top shooters in the country. From then until shortly before World War II, Milledgeville was one of the leading centers for firearms production in America. During these years, Milledgeville’s exports to Europe totaled more than $100,000 per year and its residents were known for their fine handcraftsmanship in firearms and ammunition products. Many of today’s descendants of those early gunmakers still live and work here, perpetuating this important legacy.

In 1852, Milledgeville became an incorporated community with a post office and school. The community's first store was built in 1853 by J.E.B. Stuart and Wm Fenton. In 1865, Milledgeville became home to what is now called "The Old State House" which served as the town's municipal courthouse from 1865 until 1907 when it was moved to its current location in downtown Milledgeville. In 1902, Samuel Putnam donated land for a new shopping center that would house twenty-four stores and four schools within one mile of each other on Putnam Road near Memorial Drive (now Peachtree Road). The center opened in 1903 and remains operational today as Gwinnett Place Mall
