The first white settler in Milledgeville Township (now known as Clay County) was John Pemberton in 1802. He named his new land Chatham after one of his naval friends who had died during the American Revolutionary War aboard HMS Chatham off Havana beach on September 26th of that year. From this beginning until 1865 there were only two other landowners in Milledgeville Township: Samuel Morse (1807-1892) and his son Alfred Crain (1875-1948). During World War II thousands of workers from Allentown, PA came to Milledgeville to help build facilities for General Motors plants throughout the Southeast Regional Command including those at Decatur, GA; Johns Creek, GA; Duluth, GA; and Athens/Athens/Clarke County Airport (HAV) which became operational on March 25th 1945 just before hostilities ended with Japan's surrender. Many residents saved their homes by moving into vacated GM plants when they evacuated or when their plant closed its doors temporarily during wartime production pauses. In 1947 clay county commissioners recognized Milledgeville as an official village by placing a plaque at courthouse square reading "MILLEDGEVILLE – A Village since 1917." Today’s citizens are proud to have helped make Middledgewvale one of Cobb County’s most vibrant communities Milledgeville began as an agricultural community with subsistence farming techniques based around cornmeal mush making and early cultivating tobacco fields using hogsheads cut down from mature trees near present day Slaughter Road intersection with Old Highway 411 about three miles east of downtown . For many years cornmeal mush making continued to be an important economic activity despite advances being made through market gardening methods such as irrigation systems , canning jars using pickling lime and cold storage methods . Cotton gin operations also operated until about 1960 primarily due to demand from funeral home customers who could not find other sources for casket manufacture products following World War II .
