Milledgeville, Georgia is home to the world's only gun magazine. The first gun magazine in what is now Milledgeville was founded on February 17, 1892 by John W. and Anna P. Greggs with the help of their son, Harry Greggs. The Gun Club of America was organized in 1896 and published its first issue that year. It was called "The Rifleman" and featured articles on shooting, hunting and explosives. In 1902, Harry Greggs donated the land for what became the present-day Glock Armory Museum which housed a variety of firearms including an early Model A rifle dating back to 1873. In 1907, the Gun Club merged with other organizations forming the National Rifle Association (NRA). At this time, magazines were distributed at member meetings across the country. In 1915, NRA headquarters moved from New York City to Arlington Heights near Chicago and NRA magazines began being distributed statewide throughout Illinois as well as nationally. In 1916 NRA adopted a plan for marketing arms which included creating bullet indices which would make it easier for consumers to identify ammunition products

Milledgeville was founded in 1806 by John Milledge and his wife Martha Hillis as a sawmill on the Chattahoochee River. In 1830, Milledgeville became an agricultural center with a flour mill and six other mills producing flour for local markets. By 1900, the town had a population of 10,000 and it remained an agricultural center until World War II when industry took over. Milledgeville was destroyed by fire in 1944 and has not been rebuilt since then. The community of Milledgeville developed around two churches: First Baptist Church which was built in 1826 and later replaced by the current building which opened in 1907; and Methodist Episcopal Church which was built in 1886. Both churches were significant social institutions within the community during its early years. The first school in Milledgeville was an log cabin that served as a school from 1806 to 1830. A second school opened in 1831 after county officials granted land to John Hogg for its construction along with a grist mill and three stores. The first post office located near present day Fourth Street opened on May 7, 1830 services continued until1835 when mail service began from Macon County Courthouse due to lack of transportation available at the time between Macon County and nearby towns such as Decatur or Fulton Counties In 1840, Abraham Goodwin donated land east of present day Third Street to build what would be called "Goodwin's Mill", today known as Goodyear Cotton Mills Incorporated (GCCI). Goodwin's Mill produced cottonseed oil for local use until 1865 when it became known as Southern Mills Company (SMC) after its acquisition by Gulf Oil Corporation Goodman's Mill closed down permanently in 1951 having produced more than 2 million pounds (1 million kg) of cottonseed oil during their heyday John Hogg purchased Goodwin's Mill from Southern Mills Company on July 11, 1849 becoming one of the earliest African American business owners in Georgia In 1850 he started production at his new mill of 3 acres (1 ha) including 1 storehouse/shed and 4 bales(100 m2) per day spinning raw cotton into fabric He also set up looms with 12 weaves per minute to produce cloth
