Milledgeville, Georgia is home to a rich history of gun lights. As one of the most important cities in the state, Milledgeville has been responsible for many advances in firearms technology and holster design. The city’s first gun light was designed in 1892 by Julius C. Wesson and patented that same year. It consisted of an oil-fired lamp with a Fresnel lens used to emit light into areas below. In 1916, the city passed a ordinance regulating handguns and increasing the number of handgun licensees from two to four per mile within city limits. This ordinance also allowed for the manufacture and sale of pistols without an exemption from registration requirements. In 1925, Milledgeville becameGeorgia’s first municipality to annex a rural area and pass an ordinance legalizing hunting with shotguns on public lands within its boundaries. This new law madegunlights common among Georgians as it allowed hunters to use their firearms for hunting deer, squirrels, rabbits, etc., on public land without having to register or obtain a license from the government. Gun lights continued to be popular throughout this period as they were seen as safer alternatives than candles or lanterns when hunting at night. Beginning in the early 1940s, traffic congestion caused by WWII led authorities to begin considering creating dedicated highway routes specifically for gun shows and other events related to firearms sales held in Milledgeville. In 1947, officials enacted legislation allowing limited concealed carry permit holders (who had met certain conditions) to transport unloaded handguns through Milledgeville airport onto Interstate 75 so that these individuals could buy guns elsewhere interstate without having them sold or shipped back home before they could be registered with local authorities. This event helped increase demand for handgun licenses statewide as well as promote firearm safety among civilians who would now have easy access to guns not only within Milledgeville but also beyond its borders should any hostilities arise between Georgia and another state or nation collectively . Milledgeville, Georgia is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 20,859 at the 2010 census. Milledgeville is the second largest city in Fulton County after Athens. It is home to the Georgia Institute of Technology and the only university town in Georgia. The name "Milledgeville" comes from a post office called Milligan which was established in 1837. The first settler on what is now Milledgeville was James Caldwell who purchased land from Abraham Smith in 1795. Mr. Caldwell had been banished from England for debtors' prison but he managed to find new land and establish himself as a farmer and planter near what is now downtown Milledgeville. By 1800, milling operations were being set up west of present day Milligan Street and by 1819 there were three mills operated by John Brownell and his sons Amos, William and John at what are now Fairbanks Avenue, Park Avenue and Third Street (now Fourth Street). In 1827 Joseph Aiken founded the Aiken & Cobb Company with Jno Elam as its president; this company became one of the leading cottonseed textile companies of its time. In 1836 Aiken partnered with George Rogers Clark to found Atlanta so that together they could build an empire that would include plantations all over north America including those here in Fulton County: Clarke's Creek Cotton plantation on Coweta Road/Ralph McGill Boulevard; Chattahoochee Plantation on Peachtree Road/John Heisman Boulevard; Paulding Plantation on Beltline Road/Eugene Bowersox Parkway), among others (the list can be seen HERE). The Town of Milledgeville was organized on December 1st, 1837 when two log cabins were erected at Second Place east of present day First Street for a courthouse and jail - these structures still stand today within sight of downtown MilledgeVILLE! The first meeting held herein resulted in approval for a committee to select citizens to erect fences around town limits should necessary arise due to increasing legal disputes between settlers & government officials occurring far out into rural areas adjacent to our boundaries! Citizens did not hesitate long before voting overwhelmingly-nearly 80% NAY votes-to provide proper infrastructure such as churches & schools etc., street paving (upon request) & lighting up night sky with torches during special occasions like Christmas or Thanksgiving!!! Some early residents included Drs Samuel Jarvis (& Nancy Jarvis) Samuel Morse Sr.(1801-1876), Dr Jno McAlester (& Mrs Jane McAlester) Revd Joshua Ransom(1793-1872), Capt Geo Waddell (& Mrs Sarah Waddell) Col David Hairston(1800-1869), Capt Jabez Bowen (!1807-)& numerous others... soon life here would become busy enough without need for outside assistance!!! In 1941, it was transferred to Athens County and renamed Milledgeville after General Millard Oglethorpe's daughter Adelaide Milford Oglethorpe Vanderbilt (1873-1958). Milledgeville has had several industries over the years: cotton ginning; manufacturing goods such as shoes and clothing;Agricultural production including hay wagon making;and tourism with events like rodeo and golf tournaments being held here
