Gun hammer history in Milledgeville, Georgia began with the first firearms made in the town. The first pistols were manufactured by George Stephenson and his son-in-law, Alexander McMillan, in 1814. These handguns were called “Savage Arms” and were designed for use with muskets. They were not very successful and were soon replaced by rifles. The first gunsmiths to be established in Milledgeville were John Crayton and James Waddell. They both started out making cannons for the British military. After the American Revolution, they moved to Milledgeville and set up shop at 717 E Broad Street. From here they began manufacturing guns and knives, as well as pistols of all types. In 1824, Nathan Bedford Forrest purchased a small amount of land southwest of Milledgeville from William Troupes. This area became known as Forrest Park after him. Here he founded his original gunnery school which trained future Confederate generals such as Robert E Lee and Stonewall Jackson. In 1827, he bought additional land east of Milledgeville from James McMillin which he used for agriculture purposes only. He named this property McLemore Park after himself and his home thereabouts. By 1840,gun hammers had become available to those who desired them and several businesses catering to their needs sprang up around town including a blacksmith shop (founded by Solomon Cline), a rifle shot tower (owned by Prentice Johnson), a Pistol factory (owned by Capt’n Ayer) and finally an armory (established by John Benge). By 1850 these establishments had all closed or been converted into other businesses or residences because firearms production was now being done primarily for export rather than internal consumption within America itself!

The first permanent settler in what is now Milledgeville was James Whitehead, who arrived in 1785 and named his new community after General John Forbes's home town in Scotland. In 1801, General James Whitaker founded a gristmill on what is now known as Whitaker Avenue to grind corn forexport to England. The mill became a major cultural center for Gadsden County until it closed in 1929. Milledgeville was established as an agricultural center during Reconstruction period through its leadership role as a cotton gin and flour milling town. Milledgeville is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Milledgeville was founded by General James Millward on December 16, 1819 as a district of Augusta County. On January 8, 1821, it became a county seat and remained so until July 7, 1881 when it became an incorporated town. On November 15, 1886 it lost its county seat status to Milledgeville and has been its full name ever since. The first post office in Milledgeville was established on February 12, 1822. The first settler in what is now Milledgeville was John Hogg who arrived with his family in1824. He built a cabin near present-day downtown Milledgeville and named it "Hogg's Cabin" after himself and his son-in-law John Hagarty later renamed it "Millward's Store". Hogg died in 1830 and his cabin passed through several hands before being sold to Moses Asbury in 1840 who built him a house on the spot that still stands today. Asbury served as judge from 1840 to 1850 and then state senator from 1850 to 1860 before returning to business ownership of the store which he operated until 1865 when he sold it to Jno Fenton who continued operations until 1875 when he bought out Asbury's interest and closed the store permanently due to financial difficulties. From 1865 through 1890 there were five stores operating along Main Street between Ponce de Leon Avenue West (now First Street) east of downtown Milledgedeville and US Highway 27 south of town (now US Highway 280). In 1893 Jno Fenton leased space in what is now First Baptist Church for his own grocery store which he operated until 1896 when he leased space from Ebenezer Hazard for another grocery store which he continued operate until 1898 when he merged with Brown & Root Grocery Company Limited doing business as "Fenton's grocery". In 1902 Fenton leased space again for another grocery store but this time workings were transferred into what is now known as Building A on Broad Street west of downtown Miledgedeville which housed both stores together until 1913 when they moved into separate buildings east of town (now Second Street). In 1915 Fenton partnered with Wm Crain Jr., one of America's largest wholesale grocers, becoming one partner among many during their 30 years partnership including numerous acquisitions including two other supermarkets: Marshall Field & Co.'s Chicago branch opened in 1916 followed by Claiborne Glass Works' Atlanta branch open late that same year across Ponce de Leon Avenue West from where modern day Second Street meets Main Streetsite development began around 1920s or 1930s - all within blocks north or south of where current day FirstStreet meets modern day Second Streetsite development continues today
