Milledgeville is a town in Georgia, United States. The population was 21,349 at the 2010 census. Milledgeville is the seat of Maddox County. It lies in the Chattahoochee Valley on the east side of the state line between Alabama and Georgia. The town was founded by James Merrill in 1811 as a trading post near what is now Macon,Georgia. In 1814, Merrill married Miss Jane Fairfax and moved his family to Milledgeville from their original home in Williamstown, Virginia. When Georgia became a state in 1829, Milledgeville became its capital and continued to be its primary commercial center for many years until Savannah took over that role in 1850. As part of the Reconstruction period following Reconstruction South Carolina moved into Macon and other parts of Cobb County while Georgia prohibited African Americans from holding any public office or owning land without white consent until after 1870. This effectively closed off much of what had been available to black Georgians since before Reconstruction began. In 1895 local entrepreneur John Aiken opened The Atlanta Constitution paper mill which soon became one of Atlanta's largest employers with mills located throughout metro Atlanta including Milledgeville where he also ran a grocery store/orchard operation that supplied produce to various Atlantan restaurants including Ben’s Chili House (later Benares) which still stands today on Commerce Street across from the Pritchett Automotive Museum; Peachtree Mall which housed Sam’s Club stores as well as JCPenney; Midtown Plaza which served as an anchor for Philips Lighting Companies plant; Gwinnett Plaza serving as an anchor for Coca Cola Refreshments plant; finally Winder Place Shopping Center anchored by Dillard’s Department Stores when it opened in 1972 housing several smaller retailers such as Sears Roebuck & Co.; Belk department store closed down by 2006 but remains extant inside Dillard’s old building on Trade Street adjacent to Interstate 285 traffic light). These large employers attracted numerous small businesses who competed for space and customers within city limits until consolidation occurred during the late 1970s with larger retailers moving into surrounding suburbs outside ofAtlanta while most small businesses either disappeared or converted to chain stores like Walmart or Kmart Today, Milledgeville features some Hometown USA-like aspects such as its Iowa-themed restaurant Piggyback BBQ (named after founder Jim Merrill's ancestor), two shopping malls - Midtown Plaza and Gwinnett Plaza - along with several small businesses remaining unchanged from when they were first established including those mentioned earlier such as Piggyback BBQ, Belk department store and Sears Roebuck & Co.; however mostringe visitors are now likely focused on downtown area attractions such as McConnell Stadium featuring live music nightly through December 4th through January 2nd (the only event scheduled each year outside traditional holiday seasons) Thomastown Presbyterian Church located just south of downtown has been hosting annual Christmas markets open to all since 1792 selling everything from candy canes to hay wagons since it was built next door on State Road 362 between Stone Mountain Rd./Route 1W and US 31W . Additionally there are numerous antique shops scattered throughout town offering unique items not found elsewhere within metro Atlanta
