The club was formed in 1892, making it one of the first in Georgia. It’s still active today and shot-putt events are held every year. In 1916, Milledgeville joined forces with other municipalities in concocting what would become known as “the Great War Ammunition Program”. A second store opened in 1928 and continues to operate today as First American Mercantile Company Inc.. A small school was founded here in 1906; it closed down circa 1970 due to low enrollment rates. A new elementary school opened here in 2001 with grades K-5th grade; that school remains open today as Wellesley Elementary School Inc..

Milledgeville was founded in 1837 by Colonel James Milligan and his wife, Catherine. The city is named for General George Washington's father, who died in 1799. Milledgeville became a town in 1881. The city's first store was built on the corner of Decatur and Pryor Streets. In 1906, the Georgia Railroad donated land to the city for a new depot. The millrace that crosses Pryor Street remains one of Milledgeville's most popular attractions.
