Mcdonough is a city in Pickens County, Georgia, United States. The population was 33,948 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pickens County and the second-largest city in the state. Mcdonough was established in 1811 as a village on the east bank of the Stono River. The town's name derived from General James McDonough who fought against Creek Indians in 1813. The first post office was established in 1814 and named for General James McDonough. In 1821, a new post office was opened at Mcdonough Landing on the Chattahoochee River because of its proximity to Atlanta. In 1830, an act was passed providing for a public school system in Pickens County and for a courthouse at Mcdonough Landing. A new courthouse was built in 1840 and named for General John Covington Smith who had served as military governor of Georgia during the Mexican–American War and as Ulysses S Grant's aide-de-camp during his campaigns against Confederate forces throughout South Carolina and Georgia. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered his army to cross over the Chattahoochee River into Union territory near Atlanta to attack that city while Fort Donelson lay siege to Chattanooga, Tennessee; this action led to much American loss including 5 percent of all combat fatalities during World War II due to artillery fire by Confederate forces under Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Johnston (a participant). In 1870, after twenty years without an elected mayor or council, citizens rose up with Zebulon Baird as their leader and election took place on November 3 resulting in Baird becoming Mayor with Wm Henson serving as Councilman until he ran unsuccessfully for Mayoralty again two years later; this event marked one step forward for community development following Reconstruction which followed America's Civil War ended six years earlier than planned due to southern secessionism/Confederationism; however many problems persisted such as high rates of poverty among African Americans within white society despite legal rights granted through Reconstruction legislation such as desegregation tuberculosis rates dropped from 30% prewar levels to 2% by 1880 but still remained above 50% rate by 1920 according largely due to Irish potato famine exacerbated by disease brought about by weather conditions exacerbated by Gulf Stream winds McFadden also became first African American Superintendent Schools were made available free tuition then funded through property taxes supplemented with state appropriations starting kindergarten through twelfth grades McMahan also became Trustee at US Military Academy Ft Knox Kentucky18951901 where he resided until his death1920 McNamara also served terms on City Council 1923 - 1945 With limited access education available especially before World War II most males did not pursue higher education opportunities whereas women got married around age eighteen giving them two years "window" after high school graduation before they needed out-of-state marriage licenses so they could enter into productive middle class lives; nevertheless many women did go onto earn degrees through various mediums such as teaching or working outside their homes although few achieved great success like Fannie Lou Hamer whose daughter Alice became an author

In 1838, the town was renamed for General George Washington Morgan, who had served as a brigadier general in the Mexican War. The town experienced growth during the early 1800s due to its location on the railroads that linked Atlanta with Mexico City and other parts of South America. However, by 1860, Mcdonough's population had decreased due to technological advances and immigration from Europe. By 1870, however, Mcdonough had again become a thriving community thanks to its proximity to railroads and riverboats. In 1915, Mcdonough became an all-black city after it was moved from neighboring Decatur.
