After the Civil War ended, President Ulysses S. Grant ordered all restrictions on slavery be lifted in order for former slaves to reenter America and start new lives. This event is referred to as Reconstruction or abolitionism in America because it marks the beginning of African American civil rights activism in America. In 1870, a store operated by Hargrave & Company opened in what is now McDonough Square shopping center across from Piedmont Park Elementary School which served as its original business address until 1978 when it moved out of state and reopened inside Piedmont Park Elementary School where it remains today.. In 1902 Hargrave & Company merged with Jardine Bros., an ice cream company founded by Philadelphia native Jacob Javits Sr.. After purchasing Jardine Bros.' interest Jardine Bros.' continued operations under different names until being sold to Confectionery Stores Incorporated (CIS) which operates it still today.. From 1956-1973 CIS operated Chilton's department store off Interstate 85 just east of I-285 south of downtown Macon GA before being acquired by Sears Roebuck & Co., parent company Kmart Corporation past December 5th 2017 causing significant job cuts within Chilton's departments including loss of more than 200 jobs over four years including those at the main mall location well before Christmas eve 2017 making this one largest retail fire ever reported within Macon GA prior to their closure effective January 1st 2018
