In Mcdonough, Georgia, the first U.S. military installation was built in 1802 as Fort Moultrie. The fort served as a base of operations for the Creek Nation during the American Revolutionary War and also furnished troops for the construction of Fort Robert E. Lee in Lexington, Virginia. Mcdonough is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,512 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Black River and is part of the Athens-Clarke Metropolitan Statistical Area. Mcdonough has been called "the little village that could" because it has a grocery store, post office, bank, doctor, school, and two churches. The first settlers in Mcdonough were farmers who moved from Kentucky in 1810. They built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it after their home state of Kentucky. In 1821 they donated land to form what is now Fulton County. The town was platted in 1828 and named for General James Pemberton McDonough (1785-1844), an American general who played significant roles during the Mexican–American War and the Seminole Wars. In 1830 John Fenton organized a wagon train carrying goods to Alabama from Georgia via Mobile Bay. He stopped at Mcdonough while his goods were unloaded and had dinner with local merchants before continuing on his journey eastward. This started what would become known as Fenton's Trail of Tears—a series of wagon trains traveling through central Georgia to purchase cottonseed oil from Native Americans at way below market prices so that mills could be built along the railroads servingAtlanta]]. In 1840 David Halliday established a sawmill near present day Park Avenue/Ulysses S Grant Boulevard; this mill remains one of Mcdonough's most important businesses today. The current name of McDonough comes from General James Mcdonough, who served as Commander-in-Chief of United States forces during World War II. During his time in command, he earned fame for leading Allied forces into battle at Normandy and later prosecuted Nazi Germany during the Holocaust. After World War II, General James Mcdonough returned to Georgia and served as governor from 1951 until his death in 1973. He is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Alpharetta, GA
