Rifle scopes continue to be used in various forms today and are one of the most common types of sighting equipment in firearms.
The community of Mcdonough, Georgia was founded in 1837 by Captain John A. McDonough and his wife, Anna. The town was named for General James H. McDowell, who had died in the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836. The first post office was established in 1840, and the first store was built in 1845. In 1860, the United States Post Office moved from Macon to Mcdonough and remained there until it was moved to Atlanta in 1934. The community experienced some significant growth during the late 19th century due to its location on the Eastern Railroad and its connection to Atlanta through railroads and pipelines. By 1900, Mcdonough had a population of 1,500 residents and many businesses were located here including a flour mill, grocery store, bank accountants’ office, Painters’ shop and Odd Fellows Lodge #5 (a black lodge). During World War I (1914-18),Mcdonough played an important role as a munitions plant supplying Georgia with war materiel. During the 1920s-30s,mcdonough experienced another period of growth when many new homes were built along what is now Main Street. Many of these homes are still standing today including one that is called “the White House” because it once housed President Harry S Truman when he visited Mcdonough for several days in 1951. In recent years much development has occurred within the limits of Macon County which has led to increased traffic congestion on Main Street which affects business owners both local and distant from their establishments; however this issue can be resolved by increasing funding for road maintenance which would allow more access for trucks turning onto Main Street from neighboring county roads
The first European to visit the area was a Spanish sailor, Diego de Almagro, in 1521. Englishmen landed at Macdonough on February 6, 1699, when Captain John Smith and his crew were trying to find a passage to India. The founders of Augusta named the town after General James Moore (1714-1785), who had led British troops in the American Revolution.
