John Mcdonough was born in 1802 in what is nowMcDonough, Georgia. He first settled in the area that would later becomeMcDonough County, Georgia in 1820. John married Nancy (Lawrence) Bowers on January 17, 1825 and they raised a family of six children. They were farmers and cattle ranchers until John's death in 1880. The Mcdonoughs are buried at Mount Zion Cemetery near Decatur. John Mcdonough played an important role in the history of his community. He was the original owner of what is nowMcDonough County and he helped to create its economy by operating cattle ranches and land holdings. He also served as alderman from1827-1828 and as president of the county board of supervisors from 1830-1839. In addition, John was influential politically because he supported cotton ginning and other early industrialization efforts in his community.
The Mcdonough, Georgia community was founded in 1794 by Captain John McDonough. The community grew rapidly and soon had a school, a store, and a post office. By 1881, the community had developed into a large town with a population of over 1,000 people. In 1925, the town was renamed after General James McDonough.
