Mcdonough is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 27,827 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Fulton County. It was founded in 1837 and named for General James Mclntyre McDonough, who served as commander of Union forces during the Atlanta Campaign of 1864. Fulton County was formed from parts of Cherokee Nation in 1837 and named for General James Mclntyre McDonough, who had fought at the Battle of Forts Pulaski and Kennesaw Mountain. In 1881, part of Fulton County became Troup County while other parts were given to Clayton and Jackson counties. On February 14, 1907, all but 1/4 of Fulton County (excluding Troup) became part of newly created DeKalb County when it was established by an act of the Georgia General Assembly following the American Civil War. According to the 2000 US Census Bureau report,[1] there are 27,827 people living inMcdonough total; 20% black or African American[2], 29% white[3], 25% Hispanic or Latino[4], 10% Asian or Pacific Islander[5], 5% Native American/Alaska Native[6], 3% from two or more races[]7]. This gives a median household income estimate (based on 2000 data)of $41,512 which also puts Mcdonough within "the top fifth percentile" for U.S. metropolitan areas surveyed.[8] The poverty rate is 9%.
