In 1835, Colonel William Troup bought 1/2 acre (0.14 km²) near modern day Peachtree Street and Avenue C from James Kenedy for $200 to build a road between Cumming College and downtown Atlanta for military purposes only. The road later became known as Cobb Street and remains an important artery connecting Fulton County with Downtown Atlanta today. In 1838 Major Anthony Todd began construction of the first section of US Route 75 which connected Hawkinsville with Macon County; this route is now US 75E east of town and US 25W west of town
