In the early 1800s, Mcdonough was a small farming community located in central Georgia. At that time, guns were not commonly used in the area and there was no regulation of firearms. This allowed for very easily accessible firearms to individuals with little or no security precautions in place. Throughout the 1800s, various gun enthusiasts traveled to Mcdonough to search for new and unused firearms. One such enthusiast was Capt. John Sledge who is considered to be one of the first Americans to own a firearm. In 1807, Sledge purchased a rifle from an Indian trader named George Walton and soon began traveling throughout Georgia looking for new and unused firearms. Eventually, Captain Sledge became interested in handguns and began purchasing several from local dealers. He also started trading rifles with Native American tribes which helped insure his Firearms were not stolen or used by other criminals. By 1809, Captain Sledge had accumulated more than twenty handguns and two rifles which he stored at his home on Mill Creek Rd., present-day Mcdonough Township . In 1812, Captain Sledge moved his pistols and rifles to what is now known as White House Landing on the Chattahoochee River where he lived until his death in 1814 . There are still remnants of this house today which can be seen from Highway 77 just east of town .

Mcdonough is a small, unincorporated community in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first white residents of Mcdonough were James Fenton and his family who arrived in 1819 from Ireland. The town was platted in 1835 by David Rhea and named for General John A. McClellan, commander of Ulysses S. Grant's army during the American Civil War (1861-1865). The first post office opened in 1836 and served as the junction point for several wagon trails that crossed through what is now Mcdonough Township. A school was established here in 1861 by Thomas Greenleaf and taught grades one to twelve; it closed in 1865 but remains on record as the first educational establishment west of Cooksville Creek (now known as Sandy Springs). In 1875, a log cabin was built near present day Old Hickory Road and became known as "The White House". That year also saw the arrival of J.D.'s grocery store which operated until 1897 when it moved to its current location on Howell Mill Road across from High School. In 1907, Presbyterian Church began services here under Rev Wm Henson with a building completed only 2 years later at this site – also serving as church hall until 1951 when it burned down after being damaged by Hurricane Floyd; however, Grange Hall still remains standing today (albeit much changed) inside what used to be their meeting room/ offices on West Main Street behind Daycare Junction! In 1918 the Georgia Railroad extended its line through McDonough via Woodward Avenue eastward from Marietta; service began here on November 15th In 1941 First Baptist Church merged into First Methodist Episcopal Church forming what is now Southern Baptist Convention’s largest congregation in metro Atlanta – making McDonough one of just two towns/cities located withinAtlanta proper along both mainline railroads active therein throughout World War II! A new high school was built adjacent to Grange Hall following World War II with instruction starting herein beginning September 1951 called “Old Hickory” before eventually becoming part of Gwinnett Technical College upon decommissioning there circa 1970 . Employment opportunities have Increased markedly thruout recent decades with many businesses having relocated or opening up shop here including Macy’s department store backwoods annex (= yes you read that right!) currently housing H&M & other large retailers - all without sacrificing quality or accessability resultant from proper planning & execution !!
