Mcdonough is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,262 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. The first permanent settler in Mcdonough was James A. McDonald who arrived in 1819. McDonald and his family were among the earliest white settlers in what would become Mcdonough County. In 1828, McDonald married Sarah Foster and together they founded a small log cabin on the side of a hill about east of present-day McDonough Village. In 1829, McDonald and Sarah's two children, John and Anna (Foster), came to live with their parents in what would become Mcdonough Township. In 1830, John became one of four schoolteachers hired by trustees to teach students from rural areas within the new county courthouse square which had been constructed on the east side of town Limits Road (later renamed North Avenue). From this location teacher John offered instruction for three years before moving to Muscovy Parish where he taught until 1840 when he resigned because of ill health due to malaria contracted while teaching in central Georgia near Macon Junction. John A. McDonald died October 10th 1861 at age 93 years 4 months and 14 days as a result of complications from pneumonia caused by an infection that developed during his service with Union forces during the American Civil War Anna A.(Foster)McDonald married Samuel Meeks May 12th 1886 at her father’s home located just outside Ofalia on Crawfordsville Rd
The town of Mcdonough was founded in 1785 by John McDonough and his wife, Elizabeth. The town grew quickly and soon became a center for agriculture and trade. In 1838, the town was renamed to honor General William Tecumseh Sherman. In 1892, the incorporated as a city. Mcdonough has since become an important community in Georgia's history and economy.
