The first store in Mcdonough opened in 1819. In 1830, the first school opened in the town. By 1840, the population of Mcdonough had increased to 100 people. In 1847, a post office was established in the town. In 1865, an oil well was drilled in Mcdonough and natural gas was discovered there. As a result of this discovery, business became more important in the town and it grew rapidly. By 1870, there were over 200 people living in Mcdonough. By 1920, the population had decreased to 50 people and by 1930 it had decreased to 25 people
