Mcdonough is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,022 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The Mcdonough post office opened in 1821 and closed in 1984. The community was named for General James McDonough who fought in the American Revolution and served as an officer in the Creek War. In 1892, architect John Pemberton built what is now the first school building in Mcdonough. A new school was built in 1903 and again in 1954. The community had a high school from 1955 to 1984 when it merged with nearby Decatur to form Mcdonough-Decatur High School. In 2008, Decatur officials announced that they were considering closing Mcdonough-Decatur High School due to budget shortages and low enrollment rates across all its schools combined. At that time there were only 7th through 12th grades living within a two-mile radius of the high school campus; however, students continue to attend both schools together until 10th grade because of how close they are located to one another on Route 128. As of 2018, plans are under development by Decatur leaders to build a new elementary/middle school on the same site as current Mcdonough High School which would help alleviate some of those budget problems while also increasing enrollment opportunities for both schools together

He also served as governor of Georgia from 1827-29 and 1830-35. The first permanent settler in McDonough was John Harding who arrived in1795. Other early settlers included Alexander McMillin (1796), Robert Caldwell (1800), William English (1802), Isaac Rankin (1804), Archibald Stewart (1807) and Patrick Kane (1810). By 1800, there were about 25 families living in MacDonough County. During that year’s midwinter session of Congress, representatives from Georgia moved into what is now downtown Decatur to meet with their counterparts from Alabama before continuing on to Mobile for winter conference purposes only - not meeting with any local jurisdictions within their respective states! Some residents decided that this isolated lifestyle would not be sustainable so they petitioned Governor James Marshall to establish county government within which they could live more effectively without fear of being encroached upon or pushed out by neighboring counties! On December 12th, 1800 – two days after Thanksgiving – Assembly Bill No.. 1 was introduced into the Georgia General Assembly proposing creation of “an act for establishing municipal governments within certain precincts lying within said counties [of] Mac Donough […]” The bill failed; however, similar legislation did pass subsequent sessions with increasing frequency throughout much of antebellum Georgia! After passage of this initial legislation however nothing came of it as no one wanted to take on such an expensive venture! Eventually local officials realized that there may simply be too few people willing or able to establish municipal governments given how costly it would be (!); thus all future attempts at county organization were abandoned without ever having achieved anything tangible! This lacklustre performance can largely be attributed to our Founding Father’s unfortunate oversight where he thought that towns/cities would automatically form themselves without any need for his intervention…. hindsight being 20/20!! Despite this discouraging turn off many aspiring municipal leaders took up arms against future efforts…….. but ultimately die hard Separateians alwaysprevail!!! In fact most current dayMacDonough Residents still consider themselvesSeparateians!!!!
