At that time, they were seen as valuable tools for battlefield reconnaissance and were not just limited to soldiers or civilians; navy sailors also used them during naval engagements (Lambert & Schieffer III, 1978). It was not until 1922 that a scientific instrument called a refractor was developed specifically for use with binoculars (Henderson & Henderson), which allowed users to observe things up close even while wearing glasses. After World War II ended there was renewed interest in usingbinos throughout America due to advances in technology such as television and radar. This led to more widespread distribution of these devices especially among high school students who enjoyed using them on field trips or learning about science from their teacher(Dixon & Yoder). Mcdonough, Georgia is a small town in the US state of Georgia. It is located on the Altamaha River, about 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Savannah. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,955. The name Mcdonough comes from General James McDonough's victory over Native Americans at Battle of Kennesaw Hill on October 14, 1812. The town was founded in 1838 by John Ladd and his brother-in-law George Humble as an agricultural community near what is now Roswell. In 1872, J. Dillard heating oil company built a plant here and the town grew rapidly until World War II when its economy shifted to manufacturing. After the war, many businesses closed but new ones began to emerge such as grocery stores and clothing stores. The industry went into decline during the 1990s but has since revived with a new shopping mall and several high-rise apartments development downtown that have brought new life to downtown areas such as Market Street and Riverside Drive

In 1802, James Mcdonough was born in what is now Mcdonough County, Georgia. He and his family moved to the area around Savannah, Georgia in 1814 and changed their name to McDonough. In 1821, he married Jane Randolph. They had six children: James (1822-1875), John (1824-1892), Fannie (1827-1901), Patrick (1829-1900), and Margaret (b. 1830). The family lived near Augusta for a time before moving back east to Macon County in 1845. James McDonough served as a state senator from Georgia from 1865 until his death in 1895.

In 1836, the town was renamed for General Andrew Johnson, who had been president at the time of its founding. Johnson's presidency saw great growth in the town, and it reached its peakpopulation size of 2,500 people in 1880. However, during the early years of World War I Mcdonough experienced significant economic decline as a result of military production being shifted to other towns. However, after the war ended in 1918 Mcdonough began to grow again as a result of new investment and development. Today, Mcdonough is an important community with a rich history that has helped contribute to its current state.
