The Mcdonough Armory, located in the town of Mcdonough, Georgia was founded in 1903. It served as the armory for the Third Infantry and Seventh Infantry Infantry Regiment of Georgia Cavalry. The facility was also used as a training ground for artillerymen and cavalry officers during World War I. The armory was decommissioned in 1939 and its assets were placed into storage. In 1952, the armory was reactivated by the Georgia Military Affairs board and became known asthe Georgia Arms Depot. It served as a storage depot until it closed in 1982. In 1984, a group of businessmen from Dallas, Texas purchased the armory from the Georgia Military Affairs Board and began to restoration work on it. They renovated both the buildings and equipment which made it back into operational status as an arms depot again. In 1990, they reopened it as an Ar15 Upper Receiver Shop with capabilities to produce rifles in multiple calibers including AR-10s, AK-47s, Glock handguns and more! After the war, many of these structures were dismantled and reused to house other businesses and residents throughout the years. In 2002, residents voted to change their name to "McDonough Township". This action followed the incorporation of neighboring townships into Athens-Clarke County (the original name for Clarke County) with similar names (eastern McIntosh Township renamed Newton Parish because some members wanted to keep their old home there). Today's McDonough enjoys strong economic development due to its location within close geographic proximity to major Atlanta employment areas as well as its rich history dating back to its early days as a frontier farming community
