During World War II (1939-1945), Marietta played an important role as one of several major U S airfields used by theAAF duringthe war effort; its facilities included Eighth Air Force's headquarters at nearby Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport from 1942 to 1945 and Ninth Air Force's Headquarters at nearby Smyrna from 1943 to 1945-. In addition many industries developed here: aluminum smelting operations (US Alcoa); chemical production (ExxonMobil); textiles (Hanes); truck manufacturing (Ford) ; food processing plants like Armoury Foods Incorporated; Coke Bottling plants like Coca Cola Refreshment Company; engineering companies like Lockheed Martin Company etc..
