In 1835, sections of what are now Decatur and Roswell were divided off from Athens for development as separate townships; however, due to lack of population growth or appropriation by trustees (the same people who administered Athens), Decatur remained unincorporated until 1907 when it joined Athens as one municipality under its current name. A steamboat landing on Tybee Island in 1837 attracted settlement by Methodists and Baptists looking for religious refuge during the American Civil War; these groups built their churches on or near today's Cumberland Row shopping center and Old Post Office Square within two years following their arrival. By 1840, most residents had left for better opportunities elsewhere in Georgia or south Tennessee afteridas occurred at Fayetteville (northernmost point onTybee Island) that year leading to economic decline around here followed by increased speculation surrounding this artificially generated wealth which caused many local farmers to default on loans they had taken out to secure their interests in property they no longer owned or used because prices for slave labor had crashed below market value since production ceased operations; this event also helped spur development around here including new housing developments such as First National Bank Building (now known as Constitution Hall), later renamed Cobb Business Center north side Industrial Park., grain elevator complex at west end IGA before it moved downriver where it remains today next door to Home Depot store and adjacent highway interchange today! However, construction only began on one part of this project: marketplace when Federal troops arrived in force just prior to its completion in late 1837;marketplace still stands today as part of downtown Marietta's shopping district In 1907, following several years during which Atlanta had become self-sustaining through heavy industry activity along Macon Boulevard (then known as Peachtree Street), Gurney Hallett proposed that MARIETTA merge into ATLANTIC CITY so that both cities could share resources more efficiently while maintaining separate cultures and histories; this proposal passed six to three votes by MARIETTA's City Council before ultimately being vetoed by Mayor John Burt within hours after he learned about it from news sources On July 1st, 1960 MARIETTA merged with ALPHA RETAIL CITY TO FORM THE LARGEST MULTICITY CITIES IN AMERICA – A merger that would result in over 100k people living withinAtlanta limits including 75% African Americans MARIETTA remains one of America’s poorest cities – home to 50% black residents below poverty line – but its community spirit has never been stronger than it is today
