When Spain gained independence from France in 1802, they decided to rename Marietta Creek Spanish Town instead of continuing to call it French Town. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson led his army against General James Crockett’s forces at Horseshoe Bend on the Chattahoochee River. After two days of fighting, Jackson emerged victorious and took control of Peach Orchard Battlefield where he held a field day parade on July 4th as a symbol of his victory over Crockett. After Jackson’s defeat at Horseshoe Bend, many Confederate soldiers deserted or were captured by Union forces under Ulysses S Grant; most notably Gen Jefferson Davis who later became president of United States in 1865. Most Confederate leaders such as Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in April 1865 before being brought back into slavery within three months under Ulysses S Grant’s order “You may be returned if you can prove your loyalty by giving evidence that you have not aided and abetted treason against your countrymen” Marieta became an incorporated town on December 12th 1892 when it joined Dalton County effective January 1st 1893 It's population reached 10K by 1907
One of the most significant events in Marietta's history occurred on November 16, 1864 when Confederate generals Robert E. Lee and Johnston met at the battle of Chickamauga for a final showdown. This key engagement was a turning point in the war and helped lead to Union victory.
