Marietta, Georgia is a city in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 54,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cobb County and home to the Marietta–Fulton metropolitan area with a population of 1,267,010 as of 2017. The MARTA rail system provides commuter service to Atlanta. The first European settlers in what would become Cobb County were led by Captain John Smith in 1777. When he named the area after himself, he may have been influenced by the French missionary Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne who had established a small mission near present-day Marietta in 1762. In 1802, General Richard Taylor laid out a townsite on land donated by Samuel Wortham and other private citizens around what is now downtown Marietta. On July 4th, 1802, townspeople voted to name their new community "Marietta". In 1835, William Troup founded Gadsden Junction Railroad which connected Decatur with Macon and Athens via Marietta. This railroad served as an early transportation corridor between these two cities and opened up new areas for business and development. The town started to grow rapidly due to this activity and by 1840 it had reached its current size of 508 residents within its limits – larger than any other settlement in southeastern Georgia at that time! During World War II many businesses located in downtown Marietta closed because they were unable to comply with wartime production quotas set by the AmericansWar Production Board (AWP). However most of downtown's buildings remain extant today including both the old Post Office Building and Fulton Hall which are used as office space for local companies such as Spalding Rubber Company Inc., Jiffy Lube & Supply Co., Coca Cola Bottling plant #1 (now part of PNC Financial Services), Waffle House restaurant #2 (closed), Storage Warehouse building #3 (closed), McNair Hardware store #4 (closed) - all while still retaining much historical significance! As automobiles became more popular throughout America during the 1920s Interstate 95 began construction traveling through Cobb County from north to south; however bypassing Mariettta entirely on his way towards metro Atlanta Bridge over I-285 – causing many stores along I-95 closure along with residential neighborhoods east of I-85 which followed suit.. With no continuous highway running through central Cobb County until 1957 when US Highway 85 was built following Carter Road connecting Decatur with Fayetteville we experienced some very severe housing shortages starting right after WWII due essentially to lack of another means for people living outside central Cobb County accessible without going into deep trouble or economic difficulty... finally after numerous false starts various developers purchased several large tracts adjacentTo Downtown MARETTA making Downtown MARTA once again accessiblevable just minutes away from Central City...
