Marietta, GA is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town was founded by General James Moultrie in 1802 as a small community on the east bank of the Chattahoochee River near present-day Marietta. Moultrie named it after his mother, Marietta (née Moore). In 1812, Moultrie and his army invaded Alabama and captured Fort Cobb; Marietta became one of four settlements within the new state of Georgia. The town grew rapidly and by 1828 had a population of 10,000 people. In 1845, Marietta passed an act incorporating as a city with its own Board of Aldermen and Mayor. On December 25th that year, Augustus Troup burned down the town's only frame building - a Presbyterian church - which had been built in 1827 to serve as the first courthouse in Georgia for county court cases. It wasn't until 1861 that Atlanta annexed Marietta as part of its municipal boundaries; however, most residents continued to call themselves "Marietsaians". The annexation led to some difficulties for both sides: while Atlanta wanted all Atlantans living within their city limits (and thus losing their rights to vote), Marietsa wanted access to water resources necessary for growth and refused any development beyond its existing homesites. Despite these differences – plus bitter rivalry between two adjacent municipalities over land acquisitions – both towns enjoyed rapid growth during Reconstruction until 1865 whenAtlanta seceded fromthe Union and began Confederate rule over southern areas including Fulton County(). Despite this setback for Atlanta's plans for urban expansion into what would eventually become downtown MARETTA emerged as one of ATLANTAs fastest-growing suburbs annexing other towns throughout the early 21st century while still retaining much autonomy within her own borders...resulting in current suburban sprawl stretching out nearly 2 miles (3 kilometers) from downtown MARETTA even today

On December 1, 1871, Marietta incorporated as a city.
