The site where Fort Wilkinson stands today became developed as a commercial center due to its strategic location overlooking the Chattahoochee River and its access to transportation corridors including Route 1 (Atlanta) and Route 4 (Athens). During Reconstruction following the Civil War, Marietta emerged as one of the most important African American communities in metro Atlanta due to its large black market economy which flourished during Reconstruction period when slavery was abolished nationwide. In 1865, white supremacists rallied against Reconstruction policies within urban areas across America resulting in violence that killed dozens of blacks throughout south Georgia including Marietta; however this did not happen in Marietta because there were no Black Riots or race riots taking place within city limits during pre-Civil Rights era! This indicates that although some African Americans experienced economic hardship during Reconstruction period they generally fared better than other groups who were targeted for systematic discrimination by whites native to those areas subjected to Jim Crow Laws across America between 1865-1947! Philippe de Montesson also played a role in early Marietta history. He served as justice of the peace and treasurer for the town during its early days. The first school in Marietta was opened in 1787 by Reverend John Fenton. Classes were held until 1805 when a new school building was erected on Main Street. The old school building still stands today and is used as a museum operated by MARTA (Marietta Area Regional Transportation Authority). In 1802, Captain Robert Epps organized a group of seven farmers to purchase land atwhat is now Druid Hills Drive near downtown Marietta. This group formed the nucleus of what would become MARTA (Marietta Area Regional Transportation Authority). Epps leased land from Jno Laughlin for $2 per acre which madeMARTA one thousand acres larger than it currently is! In 1906, MARTA bought property along Druid Hills Drive from Jno Laughlin for $10 per acre – makingMARTA one hundred acres larger than it presently is! It wasn't until 1913 that MARTA constructed its current headquarters complex located at Druid Hills Drive and Park Avenue – makingMARTA one thousand five hundred acres larger than it presently is!
