The town’s establishment can be traced back to the days of the American Revolution when Marietta was a center of activity for Patriots who fought for independence from Great Britain. Inaugurated as a city in 1907, Marietta has grown and changed over the years, becoming an important center in the region. Today, Marietta is known for its thriving economy and vibrant community culture. The history of Marietta begins with its founding as a small provisional settlement on the Chattahoochee River adjacent to present-day Milledgeville. The first permanent settler in what would become Marietta arrived in 1802 after spending time traveling through South Carolina and Georgia looking for land to purchase. Captain John Stedman had come across land on the Chattahoochee River where he built his cabin and named it Marietta after his daughter Mariota (Marietta). After serving as a captain during the War of 1812, Stedman moved his family to Marietta in1817 ostensibly to take advantage of new opportunities available due to Creek Indian hostilities against Great Britain. However, by 1830 most residents were British subjects because they had not taken part in or opposed American independence. As such, many properties within what would become Mariettta were confiscated by Ulysses S Grant while he was commanding General Andrew Jackson’s forces during Reconstruction following the Civil War. Consequently most of this early development took place behind closed doors as members of local families did not want any outsiders influenced their little town’s growth potential or politics – something that would change dramatically over time when outside interests became more involved in town affairs including donations from industrialists seeking economic investment or political influence inside then out post-Reconstruction Atlanta . As settlers began arriving and businesses opened up around 1800 along with advances both technological (the opening of what is now Peachtree Street), social (the forming of churches/synagogues) and professional fields such as law enforcement (the building of jail cells), there emerged an intense competitive environment which helped spur innovation among locals. On December 8th, 1918, American troops withdrew from Europe and most of Marietta returned to civilian life; however some aspects of the military presence remain today including Memorial Day parade
