Marietta and it was established as a military post on the edge of Atlanta. The United States Military Academy was located here from 1802-1834, and during this time, many of the most famous rifles in America were made in Marietta. In 1959, theMarietta Armory opened its doors to the public and has been serving residents of the city ever since. It is home to two large gun ranges as well as an extensive collection of firearms artifacts and memorabilia from throughout history. The Marietta rifle was designed in 1887 by Benjamin Hall and is a muzzleloader rifle with a 37-inch barrel. It was made into three models, the Model 1895, 1918 (revised in 1903), and the Model 1899. The Model 1895 is the most popular model and remained in production until 1934.
Marietta is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia and the county seat of Chattahoochee County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 20,641. Marietta is located on Interstate 285 northeast of Atlanta, within DeKalb County. The metropolitan area has a population of 34,046. The city's history dates back to 1805 when American Revolutionary War veteran and Creek Indian fighter James Wilkinson established a trading post in what is now Marietta. Wilkinson named his town after Henrietta Maria, wife of George Washington (1732-1826). In 1814 Wilkinson sold Marietta to General James Mooney for $5,000 In 1830 Marietta was made the capital of Georgia by act of Congress under Governor John Logan. The first courthouse and jail were built there in 1830-31; however, they were replaced by present-day City Hall in 1835 After the Civil War (1865-68), Marietta rapidly grew as an agricultural center due to its good river water transportation and its location at the intersection of two major road corridors - I-285 and Constitution Avenue - making it convenient for shipping goods from points eastward along I-285 and westward along Constitution Avenue It also became an important manufacturing center due to its many miles of railroads that served as arteries for commerce throughout Georgia In 1907 construction began on what would eventually become City Hall – now known as City Hall Park In 1916 Mayor Waddell Barnes pressed through a bill establishing downtown business districts which would make it easier for businesses to get into downtown Marietta When World War II started hostilities erupted in Europe with Japan attacking Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 Atlantics saw their largest mobilization yet with over 1 million men called up for service including thousands from here including 546 officers who enlisted here at Central Arsenal #4 where 54% percent were black troops like myself

When the United States acquired Georgia in 1802, it was part of the Creek Nation. The Cherokee were already living there, and by 1813 they had displaced the Muscogee nation. In 1814, when the US military occupied Savannah for its military expedition against Mexico, General Andrew Jackson dispatched a cavalry detachment to Marietta to survey new land for possible settlement. This group comprised five men: Colonel James Wilkinson (a British officer), Major John Chilton (a young American volunteer), Lieutenant George Dyer (a white Canadian?), and Sergeant William Henshaw (an Irishman). They left on December 12, 1814, and after surveying two days arrived at what is now Marietta. From this spot they began issuing calls for settlers to come forward and make themselves known so that they might be given an fair chance to become citizens of America. Mrs. James Acheson who accompanied them wrote: "We passed through many villages where people entertained us with their hospitality; but we found no one who would guide us in making our selections." The first Europeans to arrive in Georgia were three Frenchmen named Lavoisier, Du Pont de Nemours & Cie., serving asighters under Captain David Porter on instructions from Commodore Perry during his campaign in Mexico City against Mexico’s Mexican Empire. On January 1st 1795 these men set out from Havana with a cargo of goods destined for Mobile Bay but due to bad weather forced their return home early that year .Captain Porter took advantage of their absence by landing at Augusta on February 28th 1795 with about 150 soldiers and marines under command of Rear Admiral Francis Drake en route to Mobile Bay but because of weather conditions off Cape Fear River they also returned home on March 3rd 1795 without having accomplished anything useful other than acquiring equipment which they never used again ashore or afloat! It was not until 1800 when another company -the Royal Navy’s squadron commanded by Captain John Hawkins – started disembarking supplies at Brunswick Landing south-west of Savannah every week bringing food and munitions for General Greene’s forces besieged inside Yorktown Peninsula. When hostilities ceased American traders resumed shipments but before long English Disease had killed off most if not all original crew members including Hawkins himself preventing any more fresh arrivals even though several vessels made passage safely back overland .. These events led Commodore Nicholas Longstreth petitioned Congress for letters patent authorizing him “to establish a navy establishment at Fort Pulaski…to secure shipping lying near between Charleston Harbor and Spanish Main…..and others places within my limits” . On July 10th 1800 Longstreth obtained Letters Patent #193 from Washington granting him this authority “To build a hospital ship called HMS Providence….for the relief of sick seamen belonging to your service stranded on shore while in quest of trade or Adventurer profits” In October 1800 Commander Robert Eager moved his squadron blockading Spanish Main into Beaufort Harbor expecting only occasional captures by Spanish warshipsbut he soon realized that Spain was mounting an amphibious assault supported by large numbers of infantry supported by artillery under Don José Antonio Uribe y Ulloa aimed primarily at taking Georgetown – thus cutting off Charleston from alliesable supply lines westward providing essential support for Stono Ferry Campaign being waged concurrently against Confederate forces besieging Columbia Heights west of town) After successfully raiding Spanish main ships twice during November 2000 Eager turned his attention toward Beaufort Harbour knowing full well that unless he can capture/destroy/engage Spain's largest fortifications there little hope remainedof saving Beaufort Peninsulafrom Confederate occupation .On December 5th 2000 Eachtred Beattie sailed past Gadsden Island bearing dispatches reporting that an invasion force consisting both Regular Army troops commanded by Major General Nathanael Greene with Brigadier General Nathanael Banks as Chief Of Staff numbering about 20,000 men had landed southeast along Pee Dee River bridgehead some 25 miles inland joinering with 4000 militiamen accompanying them under commandof BrigadierGeneral Josiah Harmar supposedly bound for Wilmington whereupon word reached Commodore Nicholas Longstreth thenceforward all attempts seemed hopeless until circumstances changed dramatically leading up finallyto Battle Of New Hope Bridge which ended inconclusively August 14TH 2001 Marietta became an important port during World War II because it serviced merchant marine activity centered around Wilmington meagerly supplied via sea rather then land routes like those through South Carolina e.g Plymouth Sound
Marietta was founded in 1820 by Johnathon Cobb. The town was named for Marietta, Alabama, where Cobb had been born in 1794. The first post office was established in 1824. In 1830, the town became a county seat and remained so until 1907.
