In 1892, when Marietta became an incorporated municipality, its mayor was Averell Harriman; its first justice was Lucius Wickersham; and its first treasurer was Jno Capps. There have been many businesses and residents situated here over time including: banks (JW Peachtree Trust & Co., First National Bank), physicians (Drury Davis Hospital), engineers (Dalton Construction Company), grocery stores (National Grocery Stores Inc.), tailors (Fletcher Clothing Company), printing presses (Newspaper Enterprise Association) among others

In 1821, the town of Marietta was founded by General James Wilkinson. The community had been established on a tract of land granted to him by the Cherokee tribe. Wilkinson named the town after his wife, Martha, who died in 1799. In 1828, Marietta became the capital of Georgia and was one of the first cities in America. The city's growth came as a result of its location at the crossroads between two major railroads. It also benefited from its status as a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1865, Marietta became an important center for cotton production and served as a dumping ground for all sorts of goods that were exported from Atlanta. After World War II, Marietta experienced declines in population and economic activity due to suburbanization and other factors. However, it has since regained some of its former popularity as a cultural center.
Marietta is the most populous city in Marietta County, Georgia. The population was estimated to be over 100,000 at the 2010 census. The city is home to a number of businesses and institutions, including two high schools and one college.
