Marietta, Georgia (population: 25,000) is a city in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was estimated to be 27,711 as of 2016. It is the county seat of Fulton County and the only city in the county. In 1825 Marietta was founded by General James Wilkinson as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River between Decatur and Atlanta. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources and proximity to markets in both Atlanta and Decatur. The first school in Marietta was built in 1830 by Col. John Moultrie with $5 from his own pocket. By 1836 Marietta had a courthouse, jail, post office, Methodist church, two cotton warehouses and 400-odd inhabitants. The American Civil War began on April 14th 1861 when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter located on what is now Midtown Marietta while Union forces were nearby trying to evacuate an important concentration of artillery batteries at Fort Pickens just outside of town limits. On December 15th 1861 Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered his divisions under Jumper Hood southward towards Marietta along the Chattahoochee River towards Atlanta hoping to intercept Union troops before they could retreat back upriver into Alabama reinforcements arrived from Chattanooga Tennessee including 5 regiments of cavalry under Colonel Benjamin Butler who became known as “Butler’s Brigade” after leading them during the Battle of Chickamauga where he lost his life aged 34 years old three months later on September 17th 1863 while leading Butler’s Brigade during that battle against General George Bueler’s First Corps Confederate army commanded by Lieutenant General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson which resulted in victory for the Union army over that day achieving Confederate defeat at Killdeer Creek Bridge just north of town limits resulting in Major General Jubal Early taking command of all Confederate forces near Dalton GA with orders to march upon Atlanta). On November 3rd 1865 President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 9265 declaring martial law throughout Georgia until further notice due to concerns about possible insurrection or civil war within that state following the death of President Jefferson Davis less than one week prior at Dallas Texas from a gunshot wound received during an altercation with local militiamen not long after being elected president that same year following Richard Dreyfuss role as acting commander general for all southern military units following Ulysses S Grant becoming Commanding General United States Army Central Department effective January 1st 1865). In 1892 construction began on Braves Stadium which would become one of baseball’s most famous stadiums hosting games such as The America's Cup Races between England's yacht Britannia and America's USS Constitution which took place aboard Braves Stadium playing host also to international matches such as The Cricket World Cup held in Australia between Australia v New Zealand at Sydney Cricket Ground also featuring South Africa v India at Adelaide Oval also featured some top level boxing bouts including Sugar Ray Leonard vs Joe Frazier major heavyweight world title fight Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Don Larsen vs Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Bob Feller played outfield for both teams while players formed a human chain around home plate keeping track via video board system called Telecast Day ) In 1954 MARIETTA hosted Super Bowl XII which was won by Baltimore Orioles over Cincinnati Reds game watched by 114 million people across North America earning them their first championship since 1955 .
