On November 2, 1889, following passage of Act No. 287 (24 Statutes at Large), Macon became one-sixth part of Montgomery County within Alabama statehood which occurred on December 9th that year via revision to Acts 24 Statutes at Large 1861-1867 prepared by Jotham Hunter with assistance from George Hance). In 1905 construction began on what would become known as "Macon's Pier" or "Alameda Pier." After only three months it had been completed and became one ofAlabama's leading tourist attractions due to its views over Mobile Bay and Pensacola Bay

In 1870, whenCivil War veteran John Ayer decided to move to rural Fulton County, he named his new home "Macon" after General Jackson's old stomping ground. A year later, Ayer donated land for what would become downtown Macon. The city of Macon, Georgia was founded in 1806 by James McMurray and named for him. The city grew rapidly during the antebellum period, and by 1840 it had a population of over 10,000 people. In 1851, Macon became the first town in Georgia to be chartered as a municipality. The city was renamed Atlanta in1899 after the creation of the Atlanta Constitution Company which bought land east of downtown from Samuel Gadsden.
