In 1916, Mayor Henson ordered police officers to shoot any farm animals that were not being shown proper respect on streets near City Hall during "Macon Day" parade because some farm employees refused to give up their nut currency for service rendered by city officials during the celebration (the event was also noted for its high number of arrests). In 1933 following passage by Congress recognizing African Americans as citizens of America, downtown businesses such as Sears Roebuck & Co., American Tobacco Company and J C Penney moved from east side Market Street into more formal buildings on Peachtree Street south from Sixteenth Street which opened up more space for shops northeast from then existing Peachtree Mall shopping district built primarily thanks to General Motors Corporation which leased land located next door at 404 Peachtree St NW adjoining then Park Row apartments built primarily by United States Steel Corporation which leased land located adjacent thereto at 401 Park Row NW now known as Midtown Center mall.) During World War II many local manufacturers produced materials used in war including munitions plants like Westinghouse Electric Company that manufactured plutonium reactor parts; rubber products made by Goodyear Tire & Rubber; steel production at Bethlehem Steel Corporation;macaroni pasta made mostly at National ItalianMACaroni Manufacturing company on Broadway just north of Sixteenth Street until 1958 when production shifted completely to nearby Parma MACARONI COMPANY
