In Macon, Georgia, the history of guns and gun targets can be traced back to 1836. That year, a man named John Flournoy erected a shooting gallery on his property in what is now the Flournoy Park neighborhood. The Gallery was used for target practice by local farmers and their families. The first gun that was specifically designed for use as a target in a shooting gallery was the Sharps Rifle Company Model 1856 rifle. It was developed by Capt. Samuel Colt and manufactured by Colt’s Manufacturing Company in 1856. The Sharps Rifle Company became one of the most successful firearms companies of its time and produced over 150 different models of rifles during its existence. One of the most famousgun targets in Macon is the “Old Hickory” which is located at 45th Street and Grier Road. The Old Hickory has been identified as one of America’s favorite NRA (National Shooting Sports Foundation) Gunsights since it was donated to Macon County by then-Governor Aiken in 1959.

From 1840 through 1865, Macon experienced five different types of slave rebellions: two against slavery (1841–42), one against Reconstruction (1865), two Confederate military campaigns (1864–65), three economic depressions (1884–85/86/87), and one Native American Wars (1862). In 1933, when Gertrude Stein visited MACON for her book "Theinas", she helped rename Main Street after Gertrude Stein's mentor Alice Paul who died in 1922 at age 72 years old from tuberculosis then also pneumonia complicated by brain surgery which left her unable to speak or write without assistance until she died 3 days later at age 78½ years old on October 14th 1934 at Stroud Memorial Hospital in Atlanta GA surrounded by family & friends including her husband Yeats Pound who said “Gertrude always loved Alice Paul & I think we should have given her name back to Alice”) During World War IIMACON was home to more than 6000 soldiers serving with both American Expeditionary Forces & United States Army Air Forces stationed there including 350 women working various jobs helping maintain morale while also providing food storage equipment such as gasoline drums used for cooking gas or Rural Electrification Administration lines feeding homes with electricity transmitted wirelessly from stations near their homes
