The land around present-day Macon was purchased from Spain for $1 million dollars by an act passed by Congress on April 30th, 1804 – making it the first U.S.–Spain Treaty ever ratified! The town started off small but quickly grew due to its strategic location on I-95 (the world's third-longest freeway) and its access to markets in both rural areas across Georgia and southern Alabama (which at that time were part of Mexico). By 1830,"Atlanta had outgrown Gwinnett County" so Fulton County was created from parts of Gwinnett County including Decatur and Auburn along with Marietta (then Milledgeville) which served as county seat until 1898 when Atlanta took over! After becoming an incorporated city on December 14th, 1830 Macon prospered through continued development inspired by its high quality schools such as Furman University which opened in 1830;[1] local banks like First National Bank; insurance companies like United States Life Insurance Company;[2]and agricultural production such as cotton ginning,[3] haymaking,[4][5] granite quarrying,[6][7][8][9] brickmaking,[10][11][12],and water storage.[13] Cotton ginners went into high gear early adopters thanks to new technology developed hereabouts: Andrew Stephenson's "biological dyes” process patented January 9th 1800[14]; Eli Lilly & Co.'s self-injector pump patent granted February 5th 1800[15]; Charles Goodyear's vulcanized rubber process open about 1840:[16]; John Wesley Powell's exploration party traversing Chattahoochee River Valley between floor slopes near modern day Union Station August 8–1018 found no ice fields or glaciers then journeyed southward up valley followed Register Rapids Creek all route well known today starting at Chattahoochee Falls late August returning September 12th just before beginning their return trip back home after 8 weeks absence For more than 2 centuries we have loved our state motto “E pluribus unum” meaning many different things including “Unity through Diversity”
