Macon, Georgia is a city in western Georgia on the Flint River. The population of Macon was 40,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Bulloch County. Macon was founded in 1820 by General James K. Polk and named for him, as well as for Major-General John Caulfield, who had served under Polk during the American Civil War. The first permanent resident of what is now Macon was Captain David Denny of HMS "Eagle" on November 20, 1820 when he landed with his party to investigate reports of Indians attacking a wagon train near present day novelty town of Milledgeville. After finding no evidence to support the reported attack, Denny and his men built a small cabin here and called it "Denny's Station." In 1830 Macon had grown enough that a post office was established at the current location which became an important commercial center within several decades. A courthouse and jail were erected soon after, both financed by local merchants and settlers eager to avoid Indian raids or slave captures during the Wartime period (1850-1865). By 1870 there were over 100 businesses in downtown Macon In 1965 Macon became part of metropolitan Atlanta when Atlanta expanded its boundaries into Cobb County following enactment of legislation by Governor George Wallace that designated portions of Gwinnett County as metropolitan Atlanta proper while leaving portions eastward including Marietta unincorporated. With this change in jurisdictional status came increased growth and development throughout downtownMacon; most notably around North Avenue where two large shopping malls - One anchored by JCPenney inside an old power plant site completed in 2002), have become icons for central downtownAtlanta.
