So when General James Wilkinson arrived in early 1803 with troops destined for the Creek war against Santa Anna led by Andrew Jackson,General Richardson decided that Macon would become another post office under United States jurisdiction[1]. At first only letters were sent here; but soon packages too started arriving[2] From this began an era of great growth for Macon during which new streets and buildings were erected rapidly including two churches,[3] banks[4], a theater,[5], cotton gin[6], flour mill[7], sawmill[8],[9],[10],[11],[12]), shoe factories(1822), smelters (1828)[13]), foundry (1834)[14]), railways (1846) The rapid growth continued into the mid-19th century as Macintosh became an important railroad junction serving all directions along both railroads including connections to Chattanooga and Savannah within two years after its incorporation as a city! In 1870–71 work began on what would eventually become Delta State University & Hospital located adjacent to downtownMacintosh! And later still in 1922–24 construction began on Hawkins Street between Sixth Avenue South and Seventh Avenue North becoming known as “Century Mile” nickname derived from McDonalds restaurant located there at that time!
