Lilburn is a city located in Fayette County, Georgia. It was founded in 1802 by James McMillon and became the capital of the Creek Nation. The city was named for General John Lilburn, who served as commander of U.S. forces during the American Revolution. The population of Lilburn was 1,711 as of the 2010 census. The first permanent white settlers arrived in 1802, when James McMillon and his family set up a farm on what is now Broadway Street. By 1810, however, there were only a few families living in Lilburn because it was difficult to come by water supplies and food was very hard to find. In 1812, General George Rogers Clark's army invaded Georgia and captured Atlanta; Lilburn consequently became part of the new United States territory controlled by America. Because it lay within American territory at that time, Lilburn had no choice but to join the new government or face annexation by Canada or Mexico if they so desired. In 1840–41, while still part of Georgia's provisional government under US rule following Gaines' Rebellion (1839–40), Captain Pemberton noted that "No town in this section [of Fayette] has more than two hundred inhabitants." Lilburn slowly began to grow as an agricultural center due to its location between two major rivers and its close proximity to transportation hubs such as Marietta and Chattanooga; by 1860 it had over 5300 residents. However, although growing rapidly economically throughout most of antebellum Georgia (and even into post-Civil War times), Lilburn never attained true statewide status until after secession from Confederate America came about in 1861 amid growing tensions over slavery and states' rights issue nationwide. As ConfederateGA declined both politically and economically beginning around 1865–66—income levels dropping precipitously Along with cotton production waning along with other key economic sectors—Lilburn increasingly struggled through Reconstruction Era years until 1876 when voters finally approved incorporation into Fulton County resulting in rapid growth spurts once again becoming fully independent thereafter with just a smattering of scattered remaining community/municipality buildings extant today at various points throughout several rural areas adjacent including much recently annexed DeKalb County remains largely undeveloped save for some small parcels currently occupied primarily homebuilders/landlords
Lilburn was founded in 1811 by James Baldwin, a Scottish-born lawyer and politician who served as a justice of the peace in Georgia. The town was named for Baldwin's birthplace, Lilliput, in the United Kingdom. In 1814, Lilburn became an incorporated town with a population of around 100 people. In 1830, Lilburn became part of the new state of Georgia. Its growth continued during the next few decades, thanks to its location on the southern border of what is now Alabama and Mississippi. In 1851, Lilburn had a population of 2,000 people; by 1870 it had increased to 10,000 people. During Reconstruction (1868-1871), Lilburn became one of the most active communities within the newly created Atlanta metropolitan area. From 1865 until 1871 it was also home to black residents; after that time white residents began moving into the town again. During this time period there were many notable events at or near Lilburn such as: The Battle of Kennesaw Mountain (1865), The Atlanta Race Riot (1868), and The Third Great Southern slave revolt (1877).
