Over time, other residents began to settle around the post office - including James A. Macon in 1823 and James Dillard in 1829. In 1881, John Wesley Hardin organized a settler group called the Americus Mechanics Mission which built a log cabin on what is now west Main Street. This became known as Hardin's Depot and served as a stop on stagecoaches travelling between Atlanta and Athens until 1901 when it was replaced by Amtrak's Georgia Dome station. In 1907, an addition to the post office was built at present day east Main Street - this being followed by another building on main street in 1911 which served as the town's first courthouse. The old courthouse still stands today (although not used anymore) and is one of several such buildings located within reach of downtown Lilburn via walks or bike paths that make their way around its circumference. Although stable during most of the 20th century, smallpox epidemics beginning in 1921 caused many locals to flee to nearby townships during this time of pandemic hysteria; Lilburn saw its population drop from 14 residents in 1920 to just 4 residents by 1930 due toInternment Camps set up throughout America during World War II (the town did not experience any actual combat).
