In the early 1800s, Lilburn was a small town in central Georgia. It was known for its gunswivels, which were devices that allowed owners to rotate their guns so they could shoot them in any direction. TheGun Swivel Company was founded in 1819 by three men who developed the device. In 1821, Lilburn's first courthouse was built and the town's first post office was established. The Gun Swivel Company continued to produce and sell its products until it ceased operations in 1865.

In 1835, Captain John's son-in-law, James Caldwell, bought the town from Captain John for $1 per acre. He renamed it Caldwellville after himself. Caldwellville experienced rapid growth during the 19th century thanks to its location on the main road between Atlanta and Savannah. By 1840, it had a population of 300 people and four businesses. In 1858, Caldwellville became part of newly created Fulton County; it remained an important settlement until 1890 when it lost its status as a county seat due to changes in state government. Lilburn experienced some modest success during the early 20th century; however, it declined by World War II because of bombing raids by the United States Air Force. Afterward, it slowly regained its former prosperity through marketing efforts and development programs designed to promote local tourism including an art museum and summertime concerts at nearby McIntosh Park. But recent trends indicate that Lilburn may be losing its role as an important commercial center within Cobb County - one reason why it has not seen significant recent growth over time despite being located close to both major cities in Cobb County (Atlanta and Smyrna).
