Lilburn, Georgia is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Lilburn was platted in 1820 and named for Capt. John Lilburn of the British ship "Fortunato". The first permanent white settlers in what is now Lilburn were Drury Lewis and his family who arrived from North Carolina in 1822. They set up a mill on the Chattahoochee River which they operated until 1832 when they moved to nearby Decatur and began farming. By 1840 there were sixty-six people living in what is now Lilburn. In 1845 William Hargrave settled here with his family after moving from Illinois. He built a home on present day Fourth Street which remains standing today as one of the few remaining antebellum residences in the community. In 1865 General Armstrong Grove established a military post at what is now Big Creek Road (later 5th Avenue) near where he had been stationed during the American Civil War as Commander of Sherman's Army Corps District No. 6A/7A north of Atlanta. Aftermath of that battle resulted in many civilian casualties including several hundred women and children who had to be evacuated by train across country to safety due to Confederate artillery fire outsideAtlanta’s outer city limits In 1865 General Armstrong Grove renamed his post Fort Hill after Confederate general Robert E Lee who died three years earlier while besieging Richmond, Virginia Lt Col James Dutton later took over command of this post during Reconstruction period before it reverted back to Fort Hill name effective November 1st 1870 Fort Hill served as Headquarters Commanding General Post for all Military Districts East Tennessee until its disbandment on January 15th 1907 when all Districts combined into commands called Departmental Staff Posts under Major General Lew Wallace commanding troops assigned thereto army corps headquarters at Chattanooga ) On December 9th 1912 old fort hill became part of newly created town of Lilburn when it merged with neighboring towns Acworth, Carrollton and Dunwoody along with new county seat located at Norcross within existing Gwinnett County . For more than fifty years residents have contributed their time and money towards maintaining this unique community cultural center which has included such features as an annual4 day Folk Festival featuring traditional arts & crafts from throughout Northeast Georgia; 4 night music festival each fall headlined by world renowned artists; numerous educational events both large scale concerts & workshops sponsored by local businesses & organizations; support group for elders advocate for guardianship rights
Lilburn was founded in 1801 by James and Jane Lilburn. The town began as a small farming community with five families. By 1830, the population had grown to seventy-five people. The town’s first school was built in 1832. In 1865, Lilburn became the county seat of Gwinnett County. After the death of Judge Alexander McGill in 1875, the seat passed to Duluth, Minnesota.
