Lilburn is a small town in Lumpkin County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It was named for Lieutenant Colonel James A. Lilburn (1823-1900), an American military officer who served in the Mexican War and as brigadier general in the Indian Wars. The first permanent settler in what is now Lilburn was Tom Laughlin, who built a cabin on the present-day site of the courthouse in 1851. In 1853, John Crouch opened a store and post office here. The town started to grow when railroads arrived, and by 1865 it had a total population of 350 people. Over time, Lilburn became known for its cotton plantations and manufacturing industries such as cigars and whiskey. In 1965, Lumpkin County established an official history program to document its cultural heritage; after years of development by volunteers, this program currently encompasses over 100 holdings statewide. Lilburn is located just west of Interstate 285 on I-85/ exit 221 near milepost 578 (the intersection with GA 238). The town is about 12 miles north of Savannah along GA 278 northwest of Valdosta International Airport east of I-285/ exit 227 (Exit 258) south of Americus off US 29W approximately 8 miles southeast of Macon
