It is bordered by Roswell to the north and east, Decatur to the south and west, and Marietta to the northwest. The first people who lived in what is now Lilburn were the Cherokee Indians. The white settlers first moved into what is now Lilburn from nearby Valdosta on December 10, 1847. In 1868, when Atlanta was founded as a city, part of it was laid out as a town called Lithonia (in present-day Cobb County). However, because Atlanta became an incorporated city on February 14 of that year and Lithonia did not follow suit until 1870, it has been claimed that Lilburn actually dates back to 1847. Lilburn began as a small farming community with about 25 residents in 1850. By 1865 it had grown to over 1,000 residents; however growth slowed after that point due largely to lack of transportation options and competition from more populous cities such as Decatur and Marietta. Growth resumed after World War II when construction began on Interstate 85 which changed direction southward from Chattahoochee Valley towards Dahlonega; this created new opportunities for businesses along I-85 including industry (which would later be transformed into suburban development) and housing which sprang up around the highway's exits. As traffic increased throughout Downtown Atlanta during the late 1990s and 2000s there was an increase in demand for parking near I-285/I-75 exit 5A which led to rapid gentrification of much of downtown by early 21st century standards - areas such as Peachtree Street NW corner 3rd Ave NW have seen high levels of luxury development despite having little or no commercial activity beneath them since before then! After years of planning by local government officials dating back to at least 1978 - when plans were made for a new library within walking distance of Interstate 285 - work finally began on building what would eventually become one of America's most well-known shopping malls: Gwinnett Mall Limited Edition opened its doors on November 16th 1988 – more than 30 years ago this month! Lilburn, Georgia is a town in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. It was founded in 1807 and named for General James Brown of the American Revolution. The population was 25,869 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in what is now Lilburn were farmers who arrived in 1807. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Chattahoochee River and started to grow crops. In 1830, they erected a small store onpresentday Main Street. A year later, they organized themselves into a town government and renamed it Lilburn after their new home state of Georgia. The first post office was established in 1832 and named Main Street after Ulysses S. Grant, then-president of the United States (1828-1829). In 1835, Lilburn had two stores and twenty-four residents; by 1840 it had six stores with over one hundred residents. By 1860, when cotton became an important crop here, Lilburn had ten stores and three hundred citizens; by 1870 it had fifteen stores with four thousand residents. The community developed rapidly during this time period due to its location within easy commuting distance to Atlanta and its close ties to local mills as well as its access to education through rural schools that opened up around this time also

In the early 1800s, Lilburn's population was around 100 people. By 1860, it hadgrown to over 1,000 people. In 1865, Lieutenant General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked and destroyed much of the town during his raid on Atlanta. The attack caused great damage to the community and left many dead or injured. After the raid, most of Lilburn's residents fled to other parts of Georgia or North Carolina.
