Lilburn is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Lilburn was founded in 1784 by Captain John Lilburn and his family as a small village on the Chattahoochee River. In 1819 it moved to its present location on the eastern edge of Fulton County next to Decatur Hill and within a mile of downtown Atlanta. The first store in what is now Lilburn opened in 1824. In 1865, General Hugh Cogswell's cavalry brigade camped here while besieging Augusta; General Cogswell asked local farmers for food and water for his troops, and they contributed corn, potatoes, flour, butter, milk and bedding for their horses. The town got its name from Captains John Lilburn (1784-1866) and James Caldwell (1800-1868). They were two of three brothers who founded the village of Lilburn in 1784 adjacent to the Chattahoochee River northeast of what is now Decatur Hill. On December 12, 1819 – four days after President George Washington's inauguration – Captains John and James Lilburn donated land east of where they lived on State Road 102 near present day Lenox Rd., just south of I-285/I-95 junction. After reaching an agreement with other traders to sell goods at an auction blockaded by Federal forces off Live Oak Creek near Dahlonega on November 20th 1800 Captains John & James were able to sell all their goods including seeds & tools until November 23rd 1800 when British warships blockaded them again off Dahlonega creek located about 8 miles due south from where they live today
