Lilburn is a town in Hood County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,848 at the 2010 census. The Lilburn Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Lilburn began as a small village on the Chattahoochee River near present-day Decatur. A post office was established in 1819, and by 1830 it had grown to include the current town site. In 1837, General Nathan Bedford Forrest led a cavalry raid through Hood County and sacked Lilburn; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of Lilburn's growth as a community. After Forrest's death in 1865, many residents moved toGAto escape Reconstruction policies and violence there. In 1870, John Witherspoon drafted the Constitution for Georgia and submitted it to the state legislature; before its passage, Witherspoon moved his family from Milledgeville to start anew in what would become Lilburn. At first some people opposed secession because they thought their new community would be destroyed by Confederate forces; but soon most people supported secession because they saw themselves as part of an independent Georgia that could resist federal oppression. The first store opened in 1871; construction of courthouse began two years later and completed in 1875; during Reconstruction years much ofthe land around present-day Lilburn was used for slave labor plantations run by white landowners. After Union victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House in 1865, many free men (many of whom had served with Forrest) fled eastward into Tennessee or northwest Arkansas; among these refugees were John Witherspoon and others who founded Lilburn. In 1886 "The Atlanta Constitution" ran an article about local squabbles between black citizens and white merchants over prices for goods sold within African American neighborhoods: "No one can go too deep into detail about such matters since they are complicated enough without anyone trying to stir up trouble." This article helped set off riots that year throughout Atlanta due to differences over prices among competing businesses within African American communities experiencing rapid growth during Reconstruction period

Lilburn is a city in Kennesaw County, Georgia, United States. The population was 10,572 at the 2010 census. Lilburn is the county seat of Kennesaw County. It is part of the Cobb metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Lilburn was John Dorney in 1819. He and his family were among the first to come to Kennesaw County from Maryland. Dorney's land was on what is now Old Bridge Road east of town. He and his heirs sold their holdings to Abram Cox in 1827 and continued to live there until they sold their land again to David Kirkland in 1833. In 1837, Abraham Cox donated property southeast of town to build the first courthouse in Kennesaw County (now known as Courthouse Square). Lilburn began as an agricultural community with two small stores and four homes - all located on Church Street between First Avenue and Third Street - about one mile northeast of present-day downtown Lilburn. By 1840, however, businesses had mushroomed so much that it became necessary for a tavern keeper named Isaac Burcham to build a larger building on Custom House Place (what is now Court Street). The following year saw the opening of the first post office in Kennesaw County - named after Major General John Andrew Gadsden - when Gideon Beal donated three acres (0.8 km2) near present-day Poolesville for that purpose. The name change followed another donation by Jethro Hubbell: he gave an adjoining tract (including present-day Main Street) south of Town Square also for use as a post office site." In 1860, Ivanhoe Gibbs erected a cotton gin on what is now Court Street northwest of town square; this soon became one ofGeorgia's most important cotton mills productionally involved with New England exports such as yarns not only destined for Confederate soldiers but also general markets throughout Georgia."
