Lilburn is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Lilburn is located on the Chattahoochee River and has a humid subtropical climate. The first white settlers in what would become Lilburn were Hugh McDowell and his family who arrived in 1820 from North Carolina. In 1823 they married Margaret Boydell, daughter of General John Boydell and Juliette (Fife) Marshall. From then until 1840 there were no permanent residents in what became known as "Lilburn". From 1840 to 1870 there were five families that lived permanently in Lilburn: the Byrnes, Grooms, Hartsons, Smiths and Wilsons. In 1870 George Washington Carver moved to Lilburn with his wife Margie and two children after working on a farm near Decatur for four years. He started a grocery store called "Carver's grocery" which remains open today as an anchor tenant at 715 4th Avenue NE., just south of downtown Lilburn. In 1903 he donated land for the present day University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine campus which now occupies much of the original Carver property including where his grocery once stood. After World War II many military veterans returned to live in or around Lilburn due to its proximity to bases all over southeastern Georgia; some continue to reside here today including retired General Carl Smedley Webb Jr.. Many businesses have been established within walking distance of local high schools such as Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen & Drinks (formerly known as Golden Corral), Chevron gas station/convenience store/diner (now closed), BJ's Wholesale Club (now Macy's), Blockbuster Video stores, Chick-fil-A restaurants and several churches--most notably First Baptist Church which was formerly served by AM radio station WBTE before it switched frequencies to FM in 1978; it still airs religious programming today on 105FM from its grounds adjacent toOld Fourth Ward High School across from City Hall). The post office operated from 1865 until 1964 when it was replaced by USPS office #2 located at 711 4th Ave NE., north of downtown along Interstate 285 also serving neighboring towns such as Roswell and Duluth before being relocated eastward across I-285 into Dunwoody during this time period; mail service continued through USPS office #1 located at 408 Auburn Rd./Estate Road NW until 2005 when that building also caught fire leading to its closure effective September 1st followed by USPS office #3 located at 525 Auburn Rd./Estate Road NW which continues operations currently under construction atop Stonington Drive adjacent Gwinnett Technical College...the last post office operation saw regular production beginning on October 15th 1984 when USPS opened new facility located just east of I-285 exit 10B off Clairmont Pike overlooking Cobb Community College...It should be noted that both buildings are presently undergoing restoration with future plans for their ultimate demolition - allowing for reconstruction utilizing extant infrastructure within city limits...As one might expect given their location within close vicinity not one but two major highways converge upon lil burn - I-85 enters town via US Highway 92nd Street running northeastward concurrent with US Highway 20 while US Highway 301 skirts around the eastern edge providing access road onto I-285 heading southeastwards...This dual highway system makes driving into town quite easy although larger trucks may find routes more efficient if traveling outbound rather than entering through town)... Lil Burn experiences very mild winters averaging between 0 degrees F (-10 degrees C) and 50 degrees F (-12 degrees C) while summers are typically warm with occasional cold spells lasting up to 85 degrees F (+24 degrees C). Average rainfall year round ranges between 60 inches (150 cm) and 100 inches (250 cm)), making it one of Southeast region’s most rainfed areas however flooding does occur occasionally due primarilyto heavy rains associated with thunderstorms during late winter or early spring months... roughly halfway downriver lies Cumming AFB used by both USAF Tactical Air Command flying B-52 Stratofortresses conducting nuclear missions deep inside Mexico while GA ADSMAT Gear Test Range covers parts southwest corner Of Town Cemetery facing interstate . . . Today’s economy base consists largely of government employment accounting for 46% (2010 estimate) followed by retail trade(27%) services(14%), agriculture(7%), manufacturing(4%), transportation contributions(3%)and natural resources contributing 2%.
