The first store opened in 1832 in what is now known as Dunlap Square. In 1856, Andrew Johnson became President of the United States and ordered federal troops into Atlanta to quell a civil war starting there between abolitionists and proslavery supporters. On July 20 of that year, Federal troops burned down Dunlap Village after looting its stores during an attack by pro-slavery gunmen disguised as soldiers
